Protect the customers without restrictions
According to Arbor Networks 9th annual Worldwide Infrastructure Security Report, over 70 percent of respondents that operate data centers reported DDoS attacks this year, up dramatically from under 50 percent last year. Over 33 percent of respondents experienced attacks that exceeded the total available Internet connectivity, nearly double the number from last year. And finally, data center operators reported an increased frequency of DDoS attacks during this survey period, with nearly 10 percent of respondents experiencing over 100 attacks per month.
As a leading Internet infrastructure provider, OVH believes that security is an essential and core part of its responsibility and has therefore deployed this state of the art, integrated and by-default service to protect their customers. This capability is offered in all OVH’s branded offerings including OVH.com, Kimsufi and So_You_Start.
“The question is not whether you need a scalable anti-DDoS protection, but when you will be the victim of the first attack? OVH is committed to protect you and your project, 24/7, against any type of DDoS attacks, regardless of their length or size,” insists Octave Klaba, CEO of OVH. A mitigation system with a total capacity of 480 Gbps
To block such attacks, OVH established its own mitigation system based upon its VAC technology. This exclusive set of technologies analyzes in real-time and at high-speed all the packets, absorbing the traffic entering each server and mitigates DDoS attacks by identifying illegitimate IP packets.
This service, relying on OVH’s fiber optical network unused capacity (3 TB), guarantees the availability of customers’ web sites, servers and infrastructures. It can also prevent collateral damages that would not only affect the victim of such attacks, but also the datacenter in which the data is stored, as well as neighboring servers, subnets or even routers.
In practice, the automatic mitigation is activated between 15 to 120 seconds after the beginning of an attack. These mitigation solutions are replicated in three OVH datacenters serving two continents (BHS in North America, RBX and SBG in Europe). This way, and in a case of a global attack, the mitigation services activate simultaneously, combining their power to absorb the flow. With a total mitigation capacity of 480 Gbps (3 x 160 Gbps), OVH is able to block the strongest attacks reported so far.
The “Anti-DDoS Pro” option allows OVH.com customers to personalize the protection parameters and benefit from the Firewall Network designed by Cisco. Moreover, to drive mitigation strategies and Firewall Network on a daily basis, OVH.com’s customers can choose between the client area or a complete and secure API which lists all the possible actions. Cutting edge technologies dedicated to security
OVH’s automatic mitigation solution is built with renowned technological partners. For example, OVH datacenters use the computing power of Tilera – the world’s leader in manycore processing – for network intelligence, flow analysis and security processing.
“Tilera is providing OVH with an agile and high-performance network security platform that can be easily customized to defend their networks against current and future attacks,” said Devesh Garg, CEO, Tilera Corporation. “Our TILEmpower-Gx™ appliances and TILEncore-Gx™ Intelligent Application Adapters combined with our C/C++ and Linux programming environment enable OVH to deploy best-in-class open-source security software along with their own customized attack mitigation techniques. The result is truly a ‘Software-Defined Security Appliance’ with limitless flexibility and scalability.”
Arbor Networks PeakFlow solution is the platform of choice for the vast majority of leading DDoS managed services globally. In addition to proven attack detection and mitigation capabilities, the Arbor solution includes customized portal access, APIs and delegated management features that give OVH the flexibility and control it needs to tailor services to fit customers’ needs.
“DDoS is the number one threat to the availability of networks, applications and services. Hosting infrastructures are particularly popular targets because of the potential for collateral damage. OVH is taking a strong proactive approach to protecting their infrastructure while also offering a service to meet the needs of their customers,” said Arbor Networks President Matthew Moynahan.
