London, UK, 8th November: OVHcloud is proud to announce that Robocraft 2, the free-to-play player vs. player vehicle-based online building and battling game, will be hosted on OVHcloud dedicated servers and public cloud infrastructure.

The new title is the sequel to critically acclaimed Robocraft, and continues to focus on user-generated content, allowing players to build and battle their own block-based vehicles on land and in the air. The previous title quickly gained 16 million registered users and Freejam Games hopes to surpass this with the sequel.

“One of the big back-end changes for Robocraft 2 is that we’ve switched from client-side to server-side physics,” said Max Hayman, Senior Server Programmer, Freejam Games. “This has meant a fairly hefty increase in CPU usage, so we needed very high spec kit. We used to be with another provider, but when we looked at OVHcloud’s specialized Game Server offering, it just blew the competition out of the water.”

Freejam Games is utilising OVHcloud bare metal servers to host the core game environment, leaderboards and cosmetic aspects of the game. The team uses a vast Kubernetes environment for faster deployment, managing all of the updates and orchestration themselves. The game is a player vs player environment and requires low latency, so the server estate is spread across the world to ensure performance. The Freejam team is also using OVHcloud public cloud instances to add additional scale at speed when player demand spikes.

“OVHcloud’s console for setting up Kubernetes environments is very streamlined and makes managing our containers very easy,” added Hayman, Freejam. “Robocraft 2 is a huge game with a lot of intricate systems to calculate and we needed support to make sure that it all works and the players have an incredible time smashing and crashing machines against each other in online dedicated servers. The team at OVH has given us incredible support as we work on developing a truly groundbreaking game.”

“It’s been great supporting the Freejam team on the Robocraft 2 launch,” said Emma Dennard, VP Northern Europe, OVHcloud. “Our teams have worked really well together, the game is brilliant, and we’re delighted to be working with them to bring the best possible experience to players around the world.”

Players can now download an Early Access version of game for free from Steam or find information about the new title here. Freejam Games is an independent game studio that self-publishes its games. Committed to user-generated content and open source technologies, the team includes around twenty talented developers, and has also released creative survival game Cardlife.
