Managing our environmental impact every step of the way
As a global infrastructure provider, we build our own servers and data centers.
We also maintain strong, long-term relationships with our suppliers and the leading technology companies in the ecosystem to optimize our industrialization processes and manage our environmental impact every step of the way.
Our goal is to think and act differently to change the status quo. Our engineers strive to invent the next evolutions of the cloud. At OVHcloud we are aware of the impacts of our activities, this is why we are willing to offer solutions that are not only accessible and affordable but also frugal and low carbon. Every component is carefully selected, every stage of manufacturing is thoroughly processed, and customer needs are taken into account to enable the next generation of services, as sustainably as possible.
We work closely with our technology suppliers to address issues of stability, performance, efficiency and durability. As part of this commitment, we are able to describe our overall environmental impact not only in terms of greenhouse gases emissions (GHGs), but also energy, water, waste, and transportation management - all with great precision.
Key environmental indicators 2022
Power Usage Effectiveness
PUE measures datacenter efficiency. Efficient datacenter PUE tends to 1.
Water Usage Effectiveness
WUE measures use of water for datacenter operations.
Carbon Usage Effectiveness
CUE measures carbon intensity of the datacenter.
Renewable Energy Factor
REF measures the rate of renewable energy in our datacenters.
Reused components ratio
This ratio states that for 100 components, 25 are refurbished ones.
Reduce our emissions, a key step...
Together with our environmental policy we have ambitious objectives for the coming years. Because we are aware of the environmental impacts of the numeric world, we are committed to reduce these impacts (compressible emissions) at every stage of our servers lifecycle.
Use 100% renewable energy by 2025 (78% in 2021)
Extend the lifespan of our servers through refurbished ranges while improving components reuse ratio (34% in 2021)
Monitor our efficiency and share results through international indicators as PUE, WUE, CUE
Committ to internal low carbon freight
Reach the zero waste to landfill on our production centers by 2025
... towards Carbon Neutrality
However, reducing our impact will not be enough. We go further, to take a step towards net zero emissions. This is put in force with the following key commitments:
Get standard certifications such as ISO 50001 (energy management) and ISO 14001 (environmental management)
Commit to carbon capture program, equivalent to Scope 1 & 2 by 2025, and to all 3 scopes by 2030, as a step toward NetZero emissions
Enable our customers to get real-time information monitoring on energy impact, for all our cloud services even at the Public Cloud’s virtual machine (VM) level by 2025

2021: Climate Neutral Data Center Pact
In January 2021, OVHcloud participated in the launch of the Climate Neutral Data Center Pact. Supported by the European Commission since its inception, the Pact is a significant initiative to ensure data centers are climate neutral by 2030.
Data center operators and trade associations are committed to the European Green Deal, achieving the ambitious greenhouse gas reductions of the climate law, and leveraging technology and digitalization to make Europe climate neutral by 2050.
To ensure data centers are an integral part of the sustainable future of Europe, operators and trade associations agree to take actions to make them climate neutral by 2030.
VMware Zero Carbon Committed Initiative
OVHcloud is proud to be part of the VMware Zero Carbon Committed initiative. This initiative aims at reducing the carbon footprint of datacenters operations, with efficient & productive use of IT infrastructures as well as using renewable energy power. Through this initiative, OVHcloud is identified as a trusted sustainability partner with aligned decarbonization goals: OVHcloud ensures to lower the impact of its digital operations across the globe.
